Uruguay DNPI launches a pilot program for accelerated examination of patents

The DNPI, Uruguay’s IP Office, has published on August 20th resolution Nº6/2019 introducing a Pilot Program for accelerated examination of patent and utility model applications where patents have already been granted for the same invention in another territory. This program will start on September 1st of this year.

Following this pilot DNPI will consider as validated the substantive examination of a patent application in the following cases:

INPI Brazil introduces new Rules for the priority patent examination

INPI Brazil has introduced new rules to simplify its internal procedures for priority patent examination, meeting the demand of the productive sector. For that purpose, these implemented changes will shorten the time of the procedure to: analizing, 1 month; examination, 4 months.
These rules will also accelerate the examination of patents benefiting from the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) with the European Patent Office.

ONAPI in the Dominican Republic inaugurates a Center to enhance their user assistance

ONAPI inaugurates in Puerto Plata a Technology and Innovation Support Center (CATI), which will provide users with a new module in charge of user assistance. 

The Technology and Innovation Support Centers (CATI) are the global strategy launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in order to bring the population closer to Industrial Property, the latest technology, and Patent Databases.

IMPI Mexico to notify its official communications electronically

The Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI) has announced that their official communications in relation to Trademarks and Patents will be notified electronically.

As soon as any communication is published in the "Gaceta de la Propiedad Industrial", creators and entrepeneurs will be notified per email, reducing management time.

WIPO's theme for this year is "Reach for gold: IP and sports"

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) celebrates every year the Intellectual Property day, 26th of April, with a new theme.

WIPO's Director General, Francis Gurry, posted a video on the same day with the new theme for 2019: "Reach for gold: IP and sports". In this video, Mr Gurry stresses the importance of Intellectual Property in the world of sports, for instance, in broadcasting.

Indecopi opens a new communication channel for users wiling to know more about patents

Indecopi created in February "Whatsapp patenta", which is a whatsapp number for users who have questions related to patents, utility models or designs.

This number will be actively answering questions Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 17:30 (UTC-5:00).

Foreign institutions are also invited to use this new communication channel.

Peru agrees with Swiss MPP to have access to their patent database and licenses on medicines

Indecopi Peru signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Swiss foundation Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) to have access to their patent pool and licenses on medicines related to HIV, Tuberculosis and Hepatitis C treatment.

The MPP foundation negotiates with patent holders for licences on life-saving medicines. These licences allow generic pharmaceutical companies to manufacture and distribute patented medicines in developing countries.
